Vaikunta Ekadashi
Lord Krishna is not only worshipped as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but also remembered as the most compassionate protector of His devotees. Among His many divine pastimes, the story of Govardhan Hill stands as a powerful lesson in faith, humility, and surrender.
The Pride of Indra
In the sacred land of Vrindavan, the villagers lived simple lives, caring for their cows and depending on nature for their sustenance. Every year, they performed a grand sacrifice to please Indra, the demigod of rain, believing that rainfall was the ultimate source of their prosperity.
Observing this, young Krishna gently questioned the practice. He explained that their true duty was to care for the cows, respect nature, and perform their work sincerely. He inspired the villagers to worship Govardhan Hill, which provided grass, water, and shelter to all living beings.
Krishna Lifts Govardhan Hill
Enraged by the neglect of his worship, Indra unleashed devastating rains and storms upon Vrindavan. Torrential downpours flooded the land, and the people were filled with fear. Seeing their helplessness, Krishna calmly lifted the massive Govardhan Hill with the little finger of His left hand.
For seven continuous days and nights, Krishna held the hill aloft, providing a safe shelter beneath it. The villagers, cows, and children stood protected, witnessing the boundless mercy and power of the Lord.
The Lesson of Surrender
Realizing his mistake, Indra bowed down in humility and begged forgiveness. He understood that pride leads to downfall, while devotion leads to grace. Krishna did not punish Indra, but forgave him, teaching that true leadership is guided by compassion.
This divine pastime reminds us that when we surrender with faith and devotion, the Lord personally protects us from all dangers. Govardhan Hill stands as an eternal symbol of divine shelter and loving care.
Even today, devotees remember this pastime to strengthen their trust in Krishna, knowing that He always stands between His devotees and their troubles.
